Recreational Vehicle Insurance

Recreational Vehicle Insurance Information

Owning a recreational vehicle (RV) can be an exciting adventure, whether taking a cross-country road trip or simply exploring the great outdoors with family and friends. However, like any vehicle, RVs can also be involved in accidents or incidents leading to unexpected expenses. That's why having RV insurance is essential. RV insurance can help protect you financially in the event of an accident, theft or other covered incident.

What Does RV Insurance Typically Cover?

RV insurance typically includes the following coverages:

  • Bodily injury and property damage liability may help pay for property damage or bodily injuries you cause while driving your RV and may help cover legal fees resulting from such an accident.
  • Collision coverage may help cover damage to your RV in the event of an accident, regardless of who is at fault.
  • Comprehensive coverage may help cover non-collision damage to your RV, such as theft, vandalism, or weather-related damage.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage may cover you if you are in an accident with someone who doesn't have insurance or doesn't have enough insurance to cover the damages.
  • Personal property coverage may cover the contents of your RV, such as your furniture, electronics and other personal belongings.
  • Emergency expense coverage may cover expenses related to emergency services, such as towing or roadside assistance.

RV Insurance Requirements by State

Each state has specific laws regarding RV insurance. In Texas, your RV insurance needs depend on the type of RV you own and how you use it. The following are some of the basic requirements:

  • Liability insurance—All RV owners in Texas are required to carry a minimum of $30,000 per person for bodily injury, $60,000 per accident for bodily injury and $25,000 per accident for property damage.
  • Personal injury protection (PIP)—PIP coverage is required in Texas if you own a Class A or Class B motorhome for personal use. The minimum PIP coverage required by Texas law is $2,500 per person.

Factors That Impact RV Insurance Premiums

The following are several factors that can impact RV insurance premiums:

  • Type of RV
  • Age of the RV
  • How often you use your RV
  • How you store your RV
  • Your driving record
  • Where you live and travel
  • Your deductible
